Formal Letter Addressed to Apple CEO Tim Cook
United States Representatives Gus Bilirakis and Jan Schakowsky have penned a formal letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook expressing concerns about the company’s App Store and its potential impact on emerging technologies like blockchain and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
Requesting Information on Potential Impediment to Innovation
The letter seeks information on whether the guidelines of the App Store inadvertently hinder the progress and growth of cutting-edge innovations. The lawmakers have observed a pattern in Apple’s approach, where the company appears to both capitalize on and limit the functionality of crypto apps. This was achieved by mandating the release of “lite” versions, generating profits for Apple while reducing the overall utility of the applications. Axie Infinity’s App Store experience is cited as an example.
Concerns Over Apple’s Impact on Emerging Technologies
Through this letter, the lawmakers have expressed concerns about the potential negative consequences of Apple’s policies on the United States’ position in emerging technologies. They acknowledge that Apple has justified these limitations as a security measure with a “walled garden” approach, but there is a widespread concern that the company might be using the App Store as a tool to suppress competition.
“Our subcommittee remains committed to promoting full transparency and ensuring that Big Tech is held accountable for monopolistic behavior.”
The lawmakers emphasize the importance of comprehensively understanding the App Store guidelines and assessing the extent to which these guidelines may impede innovation.
Promoting a Level Playing Field for American Ingenuity
The representatives intend to create a level playing field within the industry to ensure that American ingenuity can continue to thrive. This is not the first time they have addressed Apple’s App Store policies, as they previously wrote a similar letter regarding TikTok and other apps originating from China.
