Artist Spotlight: Mazey Moon and the Multisensory World of mmoonstudios
For her newest collection, NFT artist Mazey Moon has taken a unique approach by turning sunsets into music. Mazey, known as mmoonstudios, collaborated with friends both in real life and online to gather photos of sunsets. With a repertoire of over 20 musical instruments, Mazey translated the colors and landscapes of each sunset into airy, abstract tunes that reflect the essence of the sunset itself.
Each musical composition was then paired with a screensaver-like animation. These animations feature swirling, morphing colors that ripple like water, creating a hybrid NFT experience that combines music and visual art without directly depicting the sunset.
According to Mazey, “If somebody sent me an image of a sunset on a beach, I’d probably use field recordings of water or waves crashing. I’ve had images with treelines, so I’ll use the position of the trees as a marker for rhythm. I’m trying to read an image as sheet music.”
In the NFT landscape dominated by Profile Picture (PFP) projects, Mazey’s work stands out. Formerly a pastry chef who transitioned to art in her late twenties, Mazey, now 32, creates her audio-visual pieces from a solar-powered warehouse on her parents’ property in Salem, Oregon. This space serves as both her living quarters and studio.
Her latest NFT work is available on Campfire, an Avalanche-native marketplace. Mazey has also minted on Ethereum and Tezos, but she prefers Avalanche for its eco-friendliness and supportive community.
Discovering Avalanche and Beyond
Mazey entered the world of NFTs in November 2021 but didn’t explore Avalanche until attending an Avalanche event in Portland several months later. She found the community to be welcoming and inclusive, which she hadn’t experienced on other blockchains.
Mazey’s artistic journey draws from her experiences in Portland galleries, where she would perform music alongside her artworks. However, health challenges such as fibromyalgia and POTS redirected her focus to digital art and NFTs.
Regarding her shift to NFTs, Mazey reflects, “I saw Web3 as a space where I could participate in my work and not have physical limitations be a problem at all.”
Embracing Multi-Sensory Art
Mazey’s artistic style integrates color theory to transmute colors into sounds, facilitated by her personal color wheel developed through extensive research. Her “Color X Music Theory” collection exemplifies this approach, featuring ambient music synchronized with crystal-colored visuals.
Unlike traditional limited editions, Mazey’s collections are infinite, allowing her to continually create new pieces at her own pace. She typically releases one or two NFTs per week, each meticulously crafted over several weeks.
Community and Future Endeavors
Delighted with her artistic home on Avalanche, Mazey appreciates the platform’s speed, low transaction fees, and vibrant community. She actively engages with her audience through initiatives like the “Audio/Visual Club,” a weekly gathering hosted via Twitter Spaces.
