Coinbase Base Launches Basenames for User-Friendly Blockchain Addresses

Coinbase Layer 2 Base has introduced a new tool called Basenames to make blockchain addresses more readable and user-friendly. Similar to the Ethereum Name Service (ENS), Basenames provides a convenient way to manage blockchain addresses with a familiar system. The Block first reported this development.

Key Features of Basenames

Basenames offer several features that enhance the user experience:

  • Connect multiple wallets, including MetaMask, Rainbow, and Coinbase Wallet.
  • Look up other Basenames and manage profiles with bios, social links, and professional skills.
  • Customized profiles that serve as a digital resume, showcasing skills and credentials on-chain.

Building Community Connections

Thomas Vieira, Head of Product at Base, emphasized the role of Basenames in fostering community connections. “Our vision for Base Names is that it is the connective tissue that will enable builders to connect with other builders,” he stated during Coinbase’s BaseCamp Summit. The tool is designed to strengthen relationships within the blockchain community.

Enhancing Transaction Security

Basenames aim to simplify transactions by replacing complex alphanumeric addresses with more memorable names. This reduces the risk of errors and makes payments more secure, benefiting both personal and professional use cases.

Adoption and Impact

Since its launch in August 2023, Coinbase Layer 2 Base has gained significant traction, particularly among decentralized exchange traders. Data from crypto researcher Token Terminal indicates that the platform supports approximately 80% of Uniswap’s monthly active traders.
