  • One of Dogecoin’s top developers exits the developer team.
  • Dogecoin wants to shift away from being known as a memecoin.
  • The developer said that he will remain as an advisor for now to ensure a smooth transition.

One of Dogecoin’s most well-known developers, Ross Nicoll, is leaving the developer team of the cryptocurrency memecoin. Nicoll stated that the workload associated with transitioning the project from a memecoin to a coin with more utility in the cryptocurrency space is extremely “overwhelming”.

Dogecoin is one of the most famous memecoins in the cryptocurrency space, reaching an all-time high (ATH) in May 2021. Not only did it reach a new ATH in 2021, it also attracted the attention of billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk.

Much of the recent activity around Dogecoin can be attributed to Elon Musk, as he expressed his intentions to turn Dogecoin into more than a memecoin. This has resulted in the online publication of a roadmap for the project, which is the first time there has been a road map for Dogecoin since the project launched in December 2013.

The project is also getting support from Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin, who will help the Dogecoin team shift the project from a Proof-of-Work consensus mechanism to a more sustainable and scalable Proof-of-Stake.

Transforming the project into more than just a memecoin is an astronomical task, according to Nicoll. It is for this reason that he has decided to step down as one of the project’s top developers and instead hand over his workload to the Dogecoin foundation.

Nicoll has however stated that he will ensure the project has a smooth transition during his departure as he will remain onboard as an advisor until the project can continue without him.
