The rapid expansion of the cryptocurrency ecosystem highlights the power of the blockchain to revolutionize financial services and beyond. However, the rise in popularity and the sheer amount of digital assets flowing through these cross-chain bridges make crypto valuable targets for hackers and scammers.
Thus, utmost caution is required to enhance security while maintaining the usability of crypto and NFT. Users need to ensure that they have a secure and user-friendly wallet to keep their digital assets safe and offline.
Arculus is a revolutionary cold storage wallet solution for securing users’ crypto and NFTs. Ancient Romans called on Arculus, the guardian god of safes and strongboxes, to ensure the protection of their cherished possessions.
What is Arculus?
Arculus is a cryptocurrency and NFT cold storage hardware wallet that protects users’ digital assets and secures their private keys with 3-factor authentication. Arculus was created by CompoSecure (NASDAQ:
CMPO), a trusted fintech leader with over 20 years of experience developing innovative security, payment, and digital storage solutions worldwide.
Seeing an evident need for a secure, trustworthy, and easy-to-use storage solution for digital assets, CompoSecure designed Arculus to enable people to safely retain the keys to their crypto and NFTs.
Arculus is composed of two components:
- Hardware: A physical Arculus Key™ Card
- Software: The Arculus Wallet™ App is available for iOS and Android.
Leveraging their expertise in security hardware and financial payments, the Arculus solution allows users to use a familiar card form factor to secure their private crypto keys. Together, the easy-to-use Arculus Key Card and its companion, the Arculus Wallet App, transform users into powerful guardians of their crypto and NFTs.
Features Offered
Unmatched Security: The Arculus Key Card and Arculus Wallet App work together to provide a real 3-factor authentication security solution that safeguards each customer’s unique crypto keys. The three factors of authentication include:
- Something You Are – The Arculus Wallet App uses biometric security systems on users’ mobile devices (e.g., fingerprint or facial recognition).
- Something You Know – The Arculus Wallet App requires a 6-digit personal PIN.
- Something You Have – The Arculus Key Card contains a CC EAL 6+ embedded secure element that holds the user’s encrypted keys and must be held to the back of the user’s mobile device to enable transactions.
Thus, Arculus can’t be hacked because it’s not connected to anything.
Simple to Use: The security features of the Arculus Key Card and Wallet App are not only superior, but they also improve the user experience.
Unlike other cold storage options, Arculus has a simple smartphone interface. Arculus’ connection with WalletConnect allows users to integrate effortlessly with the DeFi ecosystem without needing third-party apps or browser extensions.
Arculus Key Card
The Arculus Key Card is a sleek, metal card with leading-edge embedded security technology including a CC EAL6+ Secure Element Hardware Classification to securely generate and store users’ private keys.
The private keys are generated, encrypted, and stored in the Arculus Key Card’s Secure Element. The Arculus Key Card operates without the need for wires, USB connection or browser extensions, and it never runs out of power. Unlike other devices, the Arculus Key Card is shipped locked, which means the card’s programming cannot be modified, making it impossible for hacked or infected code to be inserted.
The Arculus Key Card connects with the Arculus Wallet App using secure NFC, which has a range of only a few centimeters for security purposes, as opposed to Bluetooth, which has a range of 10 meters. The user’s private keys never leave the Secure Element on the Arculus Key Card, and the card is required for signing all transactions.
The wallet architecture is built on the “split knowledge” principle. By segregating the execution logic between the secure application processor and the Secure Element, security is provided without the ability to remove or read the Arculus Key Card’s private keys.
How does it work?
As the Arculus Key Card uses a best-in-class CC EAL6+ Secure Element to encrypt and store users’ keys. The key card is not connected to anything and if the user loses it, no one else can use it but the original owner.
Users who choose to make a transaction in their Arculus Wallet App will tap their Arculus Key Card on their mobile devices. This is an important security step in the 3-factor authentication that Arculus uses to keep crypto keys safe and secure. The card communicates with the user’s wallet app via a tap-to-transact secure NFC.
The private keys are encrypted and securely stored on the user’s Arculus Key Card and are never stored online or saved on the user’s phone. During the initial wallet setup, the user will be shown the recovery seed phrase in the app with instructions to write it down to store in a safe place. The private keys are generated on the Arculus Key Card and never leave it.
Wallet Creation
When users create a new wallet or restore an existing wallet, the Arculus Wallet App first prompts the user to create a six-digit PIN. This PIN is distinct from the phone PIN and specific to the user’s Arculus Wallet App. This PIN is stored only on the card and is an important part of Arculus’ 3-factor authentication. PIN verification attempts are tracked on the card and after 3 failed PIN attempts, the card is reset and the keys on the card are wiped. Users have to restore their wallet using a unique 12-word recovery phrase.
Final Word
