BlockFi will pay settlements of up to $50 million to the 53 United States following the investigation, as well as another $50 million to the SEC.
BlockFi has been ordered to pay an administrative fee of $943,396.22 by the Iowa Insurance Commission. Additionally, the crypto platform has been ordered to cease and desist from making any untrue statement of material facts regarding securities.
Worth noting, that BlockFi has been under investigation by various United States regulatory agencies. Nevertheless, the final verdict has not crippled its business in the United States. Moreover, the company takes pride in over 1 million users and 350 institutional investors globally. Additionally, the platform manages over $10 billion in assets.
“While innovations, like cryptocurrencies, may provide for growth and evolution in the financial system, it is important that regulators ensure this occurs within an appropriate framework that protects investors while still facilitating responsible capital formation,” Iowa Insurance Commissioner Doug Ommen said. “Iowans can always double-check before investing to make sure an investment is properly registered with the Iowa Insurance Division by calling 877-955-1212.”
BlockFi and Settlements It Has to Pay
The future of BlockFi is pegged to the success of the crypto industry. Nonetheless, the company enjoys solid backing from venture capitals including Valar Ventures, Morgan Creek Capital Management, Coinbase Ventures, Galaxy Digital, Susquehanna Government Products, and Winklevoss Capital.
As a result, you can expect the company to survive in the future for as long as it complies with the set regulations.
Notably, BlockFi will pay settlements of up to $50 million to the 53 United States following the investigation, as well as another $50 million to the SEC.
Following the settlements, regulators have warned investors to be keen while investing. Additionally, crypto projects have been urged to provide investors with accurate data. This will help investors make informed decisions.
“Whatever investors’ knowledge or interest in cryptocurrency, investors need accurate information to base their decisions on,” Ommen said. “Iowans are encountering innovations in the investment area with the advent and greater adoption of cryptocurrencies, however, speculative investments such as these should be handled just as such – as speculative. Iowans should make sure they are only investing what they may be willing to lose.”
Notably, the United States regulators have been investigating BlockFi lending services, which did not inform investors widely. According to the announcement by Iowa Insurance Commission, ‘BlockFi stated in multiple website posts that its institutional loans were “typically” over-collateralized when in fact most loans were not over collateralized.
