- The crypto community is divided, with some showing support and some doubting Hoskinson’s credibility.
Cardano Founder Charles Hoskinson undermined Laura Shin’s latest book, calling it a “work of fiction.” The crypto-journalist responded by casting doubt on Hoskinson’s degree claim.
Shin’s latest book, Cryptonians, brings readers into the origins of Ethereum, the founders, and discusses the identity of the alleged ETH DAO hacker in 2016.
“It’s great to discover[Hoskinson’s] early crypto years portrayed on [sic] there,” one user tweeted having read the book. Hoskinson replied in this tweet:
Great work of fiction. Tough market to beat George R.R. Martin and Tolkien, but we wish her well

Shin hits back to Hoskinson’s comment, stating the Cardano founder should “address the discrepancies” between his claims of dropping out of a Ph.D. program versus schools’ assertion that he was enrolled as an undergrad.
She also uploaded several screenshots to support her claims. Before this, Hoskinson had repeatedly implied that he was enrolled in a postgraduate program. Shin’s findings say otherwise.
Before coming out with these accusations, Shin reached out to institutions that Hoskinson had claimed to have enrolled for his doctorate. The schools, however, have denied Hoskinson’s claims.
Some screenshots of these conversations with various institutions were shared on a Reddit thread, with Shin later retweeting a post sharing the discussion. According to Shin, Hoskinson claimed numerous times that he had completed an undergraduate degree in Numbers Theory and later dropped out from his graduate studies.
However, Shin uncovered Hoskinson was unable to get a degree despite being enrolled in undergraduate programs.
The situation sparked a debate among the community, with users siding with Hoskinson and with some criticizing him. One user tweeted that with these revelations, how are they “supposed to trust anything [Hoskinson] says.”
On the other hand, one user accused Shin of “putting words” into Hoskinson’s mouth. “Gates, Zuckerburg, etc. [were] all college dropouts. We care about tech, not small conversations,” they added.
Previously, the Cardano founder was also the center of internet flak after failing to deliver on his promise that there would be more decentralized applications on Cardano by 2021.
