The Introduction of Digital “Crypto Stamps”
The Faroe Islands have recently released a new series of digital “crypto stamps” that serve as both actual postage and nonfungible tokens (NFTs) stored on the blockchain.
Collaboration with VariusSystems
On June 23, Posta Faroe Islands, the official website for issuing postage, announced the launch of the Stamps of Maybe collection in collaboration with VariusSystems.
Enhanced Rarity through Blockchain Technology
According to the postal service, each physical stamp has a corresponding digital version stored on the blockchain, enhancing its rarity and providing users with a unique opportunity to contribute to the stamp’s creation.
Interest in Emerging Technologies
Michael Dorner, CEO of VariusSystems, observed a global interest in innovative applications of emerging technologies following his participation in a summit with the Universal Postal Union at the United Nations. Many countries expressed curiosity about NFT stamps and blockchain technology, recognizing the potential of decentralized blockchains to foster business growth and maintain a competitive edge.
Weather-Driven Digital Stamps
The stamps in the Faroe Islands’ collection are intricately linked to the local Faroese weather station, Veðurstova Føroya. The digital versions of these stamps dynamically reflect real-time weather data during activation.
Building on Previous Innovations
Notably, the implementation of blockchain technology for NFT stamps is not unique to the Faroe Islands. PostNL from the Netherlands and PostAG from Austria have also successfully issued NFT crypto stamps. PostAG’s initial editions debuted on the Ethereum blockchain in 2019, followed by an updated version in 2021 featuring near-field communication chip functionality for enhanced verification.
A New Era for Collectors
Michael Dorner previously stated to Cointelegraph that the combination of NFT technology and the longstanding tradition of stamp collecting gives rise to “collector 3.0,” revolutionizing the hobby.
