Brian Brooks, the former acting comptroller of the currency for the United States government, has recently become a member of the board of directors for Hashdex, a crypto-focused asset manager.
In an announcement on July 20, Hashdex revealed that Brooks has been appointed as the fifth member of its board and will also serve as a strategic adviser to the firm. Brooks brings with him a wealth of experience in the crypto industry, having held key positions in various prominent companies. He served as the chief legal officer of Coinbase from 2018 to 2020, acted as the comptroller of the currency from 2020 to 2021, worked as the CEO of Binance.US for approximately four months, and served as the CEO of Bitfury from October 2021 to December 2022.
Marcelo Sampaio, the co-founder, and CEO of Hashdex, emphasized the importance of Brooks’ expertise in financial regulation and the crypto industry, making him a valuable addition to the board. Currently, Brooks is employed as a managing partner at venture capital firm Valor Capital Group, which has previously invested in various crypto companies during their funding rounds.

Brooks’ Brief Stint at Binance.US
In 2021, Brian Brooks took over as the CEO of Binance.US, succeeding former CEO Catherine Coley. However, his tenure as the CEO was short-lived, surprising many in the crypto space. Brooks cited “differences over strategic direction” as the reason for his departure. A June filing in the Securities and Exchange Commission’s case against Binance revealed that Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao did not grant Brooks the autonomy to run the U.S. exchange.
