Hackers Takeover Beeple’s Twitter Account to Scam People

Beeple, the NFT artist, announced in a tweet that their Twitter had been hacked over the weekend. The hackers also launched a fake NFT drop that ended up scamming people and stealing around $400K in crypto.

The artist mentioned in their tweet that the hack was under control as they thanked Gary Vaynerchuk, the CEO of VaynerMedia, and his team for their help. Beeple also shared another tweet in the thread saying,

Stay safe out there, anything too good to be true IS A FU***** SCAM. And as side note, there will never be a SURPRISE MINT I mention one time in one place starting at 6am Sunday morning.

People lost a lot of money during these scams, one example was a fan who tweeted by saying “Sadly I was scammed by clicking to fast into the tweet, I know I was too stupid to believe in something like that but will there be any help for us? I can provide the txn ID and all. It’s all my life savings.”

Unfortunately for the scammers, cybersecurity researchers started warning Twitter users about the scam. Harry.eth, a person who works in security for the MetaMask wallet, warned crypto investors who clicked on the link and connected their wallet would end up initiating a smart contract that would take 1 ETH from their account.

Yet according to harry.eth, the scammers managed to steal $438,000 in cryptocurrencies with these two scams during only five hours.
