According to Zuckerberg, NFT creators and collectors will be able to display their NFTs on their profiles.

Photo-sharing app Instagram will start testing for non-fungible token (NFT) support this week. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed this in an announcement on Monday that ended speculation that began late last year.

According to Zuckerberg, NFT creators and collectors will be able to display their NFTs on their profiles. He did not reveal what blockchains will be supported but it has been previously reported that Meta is working for Ethereum, Polygon, Solana and Flow integration. The tech giant will also work on three-dimensional (3D) augmented reality (AR) NFTs for the Instagram stories feature.

“We’re starting building for NFTs not just in our metaverse and Reality Labs work, but also across our family of apps. We’re starting to test digital collectibles on Instagram so that creators and collectors can display their NFTs. And, you know, a huge part of this, I think goes back to what you’re saying. It’s about expression, right, and saying something about yourself. What do you want on your profile? What’s the collection that you want to show?” Zuckerberg said, speaking on the NFT testing on Instagram.

“We’re going to bring similar functionality to Facebook soon too. And then maybe to other apps in our family. We’re also going to work on augmented reality NFTs, basically, 3D NFTs, that you can bring to Instagram Stories using Spark AR, that’s our software AR platform. So you can put this kind of digital art into 3D spaces and kind of project it onto physical spaces as well,” added he.

In a since-deleted tweet, a Meta rep said compatible third-party wallets include MetaMask, Rainbow and TrustWallet.

The NFT Profile Picture Bandwagon

Micro-blogging site Twitter was the first to enable NFT integration into user profiles. As of late January, Twitter Blue subscribers using iOS devices can add hexagon-shaped NFT profile pictures to their profiles. Subscription-based social media platform OnlyFans, widely known for its adult content, announced that it was enabling support for verified Ethereum-based NFT profile pictures. Not to be outdone, video streaming service YouTube revealed that it was looking to integrate NFT technology in order to increase creator revenue and strengthen creator-user relationships and collaboration.
