Introducing Chess in Web3: The International Chess Federation’s Initiative on Avalanche

The International Chess Federation’s Web3 Initiative on Avalanche

FIDE, the governing body of competitive international chess, is developing Web3 products on Avalanche. Chess boasts over 500 million players globally, with FIDE’s tournaments like the World Chess Championship and Chess Olympiad garnering hundreds of millions of impressions.

As part of this partnership, Avalanche and Core will be prominent sponsors at FIDE tournaments, including the upcoming 2022 World Rapid and Blitz Championships. They will also invest in FIDE’s product development to integrate chess into Web3.

Blockchain Opportunities on Avalanche for Chess

  • Calculating official player ratings on-chain
  • Publishing tournament data on-chain
  • Personalizing player experiences on-chain
  • Launching a FIDE game explorer powered by on-chain data
  • Issuing tournament prize pools on Avalanche

Founded nearly a century ago, FIDE links 200 national chess associations into a single international body. It oversees prestigious events like the World Chess Championships and has seen legendary matches involving grandmasters such as Fischer, Kasparov, and Carlsen.

Chess has evolved into a modern sport, with over 100 million people playing online regularly and engaging in 25 million digital matches daily.

Now, chess is poised for another evolution on Avalanche.

“We are excited to get into this project. Ava Labs is one of the leaders in on-chain technologies, while FIDE is constantly enhancing player engagement and experience. Chess is a unique sport, and this collaboration will unify our community and strengthen ties between players, clubs, federations, and FIDE,” said Emil Sutovsky, CEO of FIDE.

“The possibilities created by bringing chess on-chain are as limitless as the game itself,” said Emin Gün Sirer, CEO of Ava Labs. “We are thrilled to welcome FIDE to the Avalanche community and usher chess into a new era together. On Avalanche, players worldwide will experience chess in unprecedented ways.”

The partnership begins at the 2022 World Rapid and Blitz Championship in Almaty, Kazakhstan, from December 25–30, 2022.

Online and in-person fans will see promotion for Avalanche (AVAX) and Core, a free, self-custody wallet designed for secure use of Web3 dApps.

About FIDE

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) governs the sport of chess globally and regulates all international competitions. Established as a non-governmental organization, FIDE was recognized by the International Olympic Committee as a Global Sporting Organization in 1999.

FIDE, initially founded in 1924 in Paris under the motto “Gens una Sumus” (Latin for “We are one Family”), is one of the earliest International Sports Federations. It now encompasses 199 countries as affiliate members through National Chess Federations.

Chess is a truly global sport, with tens of millions of players on every continent and more than 60 million games played daily on average.
