Blockchain Gaming Is Regaining Momentum
Blockchain gaming, which saw a remarkable surge in 2021, is gradually regaining traction after years of setbacks that led many crypto critics to declare the sector dead. In a recent integration, Magic Eden, a multi-chain non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace, has partnered with Ubisoft and the Arbitrum Foundation to launch a new NFT game, signaling the resurgence of NFT gaming.
Magic Eden and Ubisoft Collaborate to Launch a New NFT Game
In an October 4 blog post, the NFT marketplace Magic Eden confirmed its partnership with Ubisoft to launch a new NFT game titled ‘Captain Laserhawk’. This collaboration between Magic Eden and Ubisoft has brought renewed hope among gamers. Blockchain-based gaming, which has existed since 2017, gained widespread attention in 2021, though it faced challenges in the subsequent years, causing NFT gaming to lose traction.
Launched in September 2021, Magic Eden has become one of the leading multi-chain NFT marketplaces, supporting NFTs on Solana, Ethereum, Polygon, Bitcoin, and Arbitrum blockchain networks. By 2024, Magic Eden rapidly grew into the most prominent marketplace on the Solana blockchain, where it initially launched.
The NFT platform allows users to create, buy, sell, and collect NFTs. Magic Eden offers several products, including its flagship service, Launchpad, which allows creators to launch and mint NFT collections directly on the marketplace. Additionally, Magic Eden provides a crypto wallet designed to deliver a secure and user-friendly experience in the world of Web3.
On the other hand, Ubisoft is a French video game publisher with headquarters in Saint-Mandé and development studios worldwide. The company is known for creating and distributing interactive entertainment and services, including popular titles like Assassin’s Creed, Wii Just Dance, Tom Clancy’s series, Rayman, Far Cry, and Watch Dogs. Ubisoft is also a major developer for Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo consoles.
Overview of Magic Eden and Ubisoft’s NFT Game
With the new integration, Magic Eden and Ubisoft plan to leverage their expertise in gaming to launch a new NFT-based game. The partnership will introduce a new NFT collection, allowing holders to participate in the game. The Captain Laserhawk game is being launched on Arbitrum, an Ethereum layer-2 network.
- The Captain Laserhawk NFT collection will feature a limited edition of 10,000 NFTs hosted on the Arbitrum blockchain.
- Each NFT will provide access to the immersive game experience, governance model, user-generated content (UGC) features, and reward systems.
- These NFTs will empower players to actively engage in and shape the future of the game.
Commenting on the new NFT project, Mr. Didier Genevois, the Web3 Executive Producer at Ubisoft, stated:
“We’re excited to bring a new level of player engagement and ownership to gaming with Captain Laserhawk: the G.A.M.E. Through the integration of Web3, we’re empowering our community to not only play but shape the future of the game. It’s about creating a collaborative ecosystem where players’ decisions and creations directly impact the game’s evolution, making the experience truly their own.”
Jack Lu, the Magic Eden CEO and co-founder, added:
“It’s incredible to see the ways Web3 and blockchain technology can influence and enhance the gaming experience, and we’re grateful to the teams at Ubisoft and Arbitrum Foundation for the collaboration. Enabling players to help create, craft, and own part of the gameplay experience through Magic Eden NFTs is truly a gift to its community.”
