Polkadot, a self-described “layer 0 blockchain,” has recently filed a trademark registration for what appears to be a blockchain-based messaging application. The trademark filing mentions social networking software, and the phrase “Polkadot Converse” has been trademarked. Additional information on the app has been added in the “good and services” section of the filing.
Polkadot’s Trademark Coverage Includes:
- Software for social networking
- Software for creating, managing, and interacting with an online community
- Software for creating, software for sending and receiving electronic messages, graphics, images, audio content
Despite several attempts from other players in the Web3 industry, social media has never quite taken off. Polkadot (DOT) is currently ranked as the 11th largest cryptocurrency, with a market capitalization of around $7.5 billion, according to CoinDesk data. A move into social media and instant messaging would be a significant departure for Polkadot, which has previously focused on its parachain technology and rapid transaction speeds.
