  • Neymar Jr. spent over $1 million to purchase two NFTs from the Bored Ape Yacht Club, one of which he’s using for the experimental Twitter Blue profile image.
  • He joins Snoop Dogg, Mark Cuban, DJ Khaled, Jack Miller and a host of other celebrities who have all purchased Bored Ape NFTs.

The Bored Ape Yacht NFTs club is one of the biggest in the industry, and it has now added one of the world’s biggest football stars. Neymar Jr., a superstar who plays in the French league for PSG, recently spent over $1 million on two NFTs,

Neymar took to Twitter to reveal that he’s now a member of the Ape club, a club that’s attracting hordes of celebrities as NFTs become the in-thing in celebrity circles.

Data from OpenSea shows that the footballer, who also plays for and is the second-highest scoring player for Brazil, purchased the first NFT, BAC #6633 for 159.99 ETH, at the time worth $517,000. Neymar is using this NFT as his profile image on his social media accounts. This NFT has shot up 66 percent in a month, having been sold for 96 ETH just over a month ago.

Neymar splashed even more on his second NFT, BAYC #5269, which he bought for 189.69 ETH, worth $613,000 at the time. This NFT features an ape with laser eyes, the de facto “Bitcoin to the moon” social media imagery.

Neymar was able to use the NFT as his profile picture directly, and not through a copied image, through Twitter Blue, a new version that gives paying users a number of features unavailable to those using the free version.

Twitter Blue launched in June last year, with users in Australia and Canada the first to test the offering. And yesterday, January 20, Twitter announced that it would start offering its Blue users the option of having NFT avatars.

Users get to connect their public blockchain addresses to their profile for functionality. Twiter supports most popular wallets, from MetaMask and Trust Wallet to Coinbase Wallet and Ledger Live. With the wallet linked to the profile, the user can then choose any one of their NFTs to use as profile images.

Twitter claims that it won’t keep an ongoing connection with a user’s wallet. However, it will store the public address to ensure that a user can no longer use an NFT that they have sold or is no longer associated with their wallet.

Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs will undoubtedly dominate Twitter Blue as more people continue to ‘ape in’ to the BAYC NFTs. Celebrities like Mark Cuban, Jack Miller, DJ Khaled, Snoop Dogg, Jimmy Fallon, Post Malone, Steph Curry, The Chainsmokers, Gary Vaynerchuk, and more have all bought Bored Apes.
