Upcoming Upgrades for BNB Chain
Binance’s BNB Chain is set to undergo two significant upgrades in August 2023. These upgrades, named Plato and Hertz, have been carefully designed to enhance the security and compatibility of the blockchain network.
Plato Upgrade – August 10th
The first upgrade, Plato, is scheduled for August 10th. This upgrade introduces a new feature called BEP-126, which implements a fast finality mechanism. This mechanism is designed to minimize the potential for malicious blockchain reorganizations and improve the stability of block production.
Arno Bauer, the senior solution architect of BNB Chain, shared insights into the network upgrades. He emphasized that the fast finality mechanism is a pivotal advancement for blockchain security and efficiency on the BNB Smart Chain.
Finality, a crucial concept in blockchain, ensures that once a transaction or block is added to the chain, it cannot be altered or reversed. BEP-126 achieves fast finality through a series of steps:
- Validators propose a block to the network.
- The proposed block is propagated to other validators.
- Validators sign the block with their private keys and create a voting message.
- Validator votes are collected in a pool.
- If the main block receives sufficient votes, the voting process is finalized.
Validators must adhere to specific rules during the voting process, ensuring integrity. Additionally, finalization rules determine the justification of blocks and sub-blocks, preserving the trust and security of the network.
Hertz Upgrade – August 30th
The Hertz upgrade is set to take place on August 30th. This upgrade aims to align the BNB Chain with the latest developments of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) blockchain. Compatibility with Ethereum’s recent Berlin and London forks is vital for the BNB Chain’s growth and development.
Arno Bauer highlighted the importance of maintaining compatibility, stating that enabling Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) on the BNB Chain ensures a seamless ecosystem and development experience.
The fast finality mechanism implemented in the Plato upgrade is expected to enhance the security and efficiency of decentralized applications (DApps) on the BNB Chain. This advancement will lead to a more secure and responsive environment for DApps operating within the network.
With the upcoming Plato and Hertz upgrades, Binance’s BNB Chain is poised to enter a new era of enhanced security, compatibility, and efficiency, reinforcing its position as a prominent player in the blockchain landscape.
