- Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock for mocking wife Jada Pinkett Smith.
- The video of the slap is going viral.
- The likelihood that the clip will be turned into an NFT is high.
The Oscars, for the past couple of years, have been leaving audiences confused and shocked — either for having the wrong movie called as the winner and for just being criminally boring.
And this year, it’s yet another mind-boggling debacle. In a strange and unexpected turn of events, actor Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage after the latter cracked an insensitive joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith’s wife.
Chris Rock was on stage to present an award when he decided to make a couple of jokes about the audience members, one of whom was Jada. “Jada, I love you. G.I Jane too, can’t wait to see it,” said the comedian taking a jab at the actress’ bald hairstyle. A minute later, Will Smith was on stage. What followed was a quick but seemingly painful slap.
Since then, the clip of Chris Rock being hit has taken over social media with several celebrities voicing their opinions. Much of the general public seems to be on Chris Rocks’ side while many others also support Will Smith’s decision to defend his wife’s honor. Either way, the clip is doing rounds, with one YouTube video garnering over 277K views in less than three hours.
Considering that popular videos like “Charlie Bit Me” were auctioned off as an NFT, the likelihood of celeb spats being turned into NFTs is also high. NFTs of popular videos are not a new thing. With platforms like YouTube encouraging creators to move in this direction, there seems to be no dearth of ideas for video NFTs.
YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki even wrote about NFTs in a letter to creators. “We’re always focused on expanding the YouTube ecosystem to help creators capitalize on emerging technologies, including things like NFTs while continuing to strengthen and enhance the experiences creators and fans have on YouTube,” she said.
However, it needs to be seen what Chris Rock would say about having his embarrassing moment “memorialized” forever.
