Game Publisher Nexon Partners with Polygon to Evolve MapleStory Universe to Web3
Game publisher Nexon has announced its plans to build a dedicated Polygon Supernet to support the blockchain ecosystem of its popular game, MapleStory Universe. This move marks Nexon’s entry into the Web3 space, with the company’s annual revenues exceeding $2.6 billion in 2022, and MapleStory boasting 180 million registered users.
Embracing Web3: Nexon’s Vision for MapleStory Universe
Currently, in the Web2 version of MapleStory, players can trade items using in-game currency. However, the Web3 version of MapleStory will introduce Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) that players can earn, unlocking future utilities and benefits. MapleStory Universe group leader, Sun-young Hwang, expressed excitement about expanding the NFT ecosystem using Polygon, the top protocol for Web3 gaming. “It is the perfect choice to power the ecosystem,” said Hwang. “We will work closely with the team at Polygon Labs to develop and market the game.”
Strong Message to the Gaming Industry: Nexon Chooses Polygon
Nexon’s decision to select Polygon Supernets to power MapleStory Universe is seen as a significant statement about the future of blockchain gaming by Ryan Wyatt, President of Polygon Labs. “Korea is a critical market in bringing Web3 gaming to the masses, and Polygon Labs is committed to offering multiple solutions to bring their visions to the market,” added Wyatt.
Exploring Polygon: A Sidechain Scaling Solution
Polygon is a popular “sidechain” scaling solution that runs alongside the Ethereum blockchain, enabling fast transactions and low fees. The network’s native cryptocurrency, MATIC, is used for fees, staking, and other purposes. Existing projects such as Aave and Curve have already adopted Polygon’s chain, showcasing its effectiveness as an alternative to Ethereum.
